Characters doing their own thing and bitching about fan fiction

It's always weird when your characters don't behave the way you want them to.

For example, in my Potter fic I've found that Scorpius has kind have been pushed to the wayside by an original character, who was meant to be important but not 'Al's best friend' important.
Scorpius is still there, but Steve's definitely become the Ron of the situation.
 There is no Hermione.

By that I mean that there isn't a whiny smart arse hanging around and telling people what to do when they don't want any input.

Which is exactly what Hermione did in that first book. She was really annoying.
Of course, I can't say that without contrasting it with the later in the series where Harry and Ron were really annoying because for as self important as she was, Hermione was pretty much always right.

Rose isn't going to take on the role of the Hermione in this fic series because A. she's in a different house and isn't around enough to do it and B. she's got her hands full with another character who really does need someone to try and stop him from doing something stupid.

I'm actually pretty happy it turned out this way. I don't really seem to have a power trio and if you count Albus, Steve and Albus' not girlfriend Suzanne as one, then I haven't taken the easy way out and just used Albus, Scorpius and Rose.

Which was never likely anyway, as part of the point of the fic was to introduce Suzanne, who doesn't fall in love with the wizarding world and whose life has actually been negatively affected by being a witch.

I'm honestly surprised that no characters have been like that, considering that every muggle-born and a lot of half-blood pupils have been cut off from everyone they know and love. Especially when you take into account that there are no phones and the post is delivered by owl.

“My parents are famous/infamous” just isn't interesting. Especially in next gen Harry Potter fic because, if you haven’t noticed, that’s pretty much what happened in the books. Harry had famous parents and Malfoy had infamous ones, and doing exactly the same thing with Albus/James/Lily, Rose/Hugo and Scorpius is pretty pointless. It doesn't bring anything new to the universe, whereas I believe that characters like Suzanne, Steve, Joseph, Vasanti and most importantly of all, Adair and Fraser do.

Isn't the point of fan fiction to do something new with an established series? If you’re doing exactly the same thing as was done in the source material with new characters, then why not just do fan fiction with the original characters? I mean, yes, J.K. Rowling does make her character’s children look like clones of their parents, but that’s because she clearly can’t be bothered to do something more realistic, not because she wants her characters to be exactly the same as each other in every respect.

On a less bitchy note, I'll be posting pics of two finished pieces tomorrow.

There is no reasonable way for them to keep in touch with old friends from primary school or any family members who aren't in on the fact that the child is a witch.

It's even worse for the 'next generation' as those children have been completely removed from the internet as well as their friends and family. They've been ripped from everything that they know and love and have been thrust into a world that's by degrees frustratingly archaic and frighteningly futuristic.

I don't know about you, but that's a far more interesting story than the kids of Harry, Ron, Hermione and Malfoy arsing about in the world they grew up in.

Also, if you're interested, there's a link to my Potter!fic here.
